A massive compound that could easily host several plantations, this resort occupies 1,350 lush beachfront acres of manicured golf greens, bike trails, and a breathtaking coastal wilderness of marshes and lagoons. The resort is so spread out that a free tram runs around the grounds every 15 minutes. The Plantation is known for its outstanding sports offerings. A massive spa also features a small island nearby that’s dedicated to watsu massage treatments. The eight-story, Mediterranean-style Amelia Inn & Beach Club is the resort’s focal point with 249 spacious, upscale rooms. Traditionally furnished, the rooms boast oceanview patios or balconies. Other accommodations here are one- to three-bedroom privately owned condominium apartments (or “villas,” in Florida speak). All but a few have balconies or patios. All have fully equipped kitchens. The Ocean Grill restaurant serves exceptional and expensive contemporary regional cuisine, with stunning ocean views. Other restaurants and nightspots are also on the property.

Note: You can Segway your way around the massive resort. Prices for Segway transportation devices range from $40 for a 30-minute kids’ excursion to $80 for a 1 1/2-hour safari tour of the property. All tours include orientation and coaching.
