Lake Lanier

How Lake Lanier feeds metro Atlanta

Lake Lanier is the source of drinking water for most of metro Atlanta. The reservoir fed by the Chattahoochee River was created in 1956 when the Buford Dam was completed. Georgia, experiencing a historic drought in 2007, is trying to store more water in Lake Lanier while limiting flows into Apalachicola Bay. But, the man-made lake is also a source of rancor among Georgia, Alabama and Florida. The states have been fighting over water rights.
