Georgia peanuts and the salmonella crisis

Blakely plant at center of outbreak

Federal officials say Peanut Corp. of America - a Georgia peanut plant in tiny Blakely - is the source of peanut products contaminated with salmonella. More than 500 people have gotten sick in the outbreak, which is continuing and has been linked to at least eight deaths. Thousands of products have been recalled.

The crisis has prompted questioning of inspection procedures and led to criminal prosecutions.
