Wooten played as a true freshman for UGA in 2009. He caught 10 passes for 197 yards and two touchdowns.
Georgia coach Mark Richt’s public plea for wide receivers is apparently being answered. Rantavious Wooten of Belle Glade, Fla., who narrowly committed to LSU over Georgia, confirmed with the AJC on Thursday night that he will indeed make an official visit to Athens this weekend. There had been speculation Wooten was backing out on the visit because LSU coaches weren’t happy about the situation. Andre Debose of Sanford, Fla., who is one of the nation’s top uncommitted wide receivers, will also taking a recruiting trip to Georgia this weekend, according to Rivals. Richt recently said that “signing at least two wide receivers” was one of the top priorities for the few remaining scholarships in Georgia’s 2009 recruiting class. Also, wide receiver Marlon Brown of Memphis, who took an official visit to Georgia for the Alabama game, revealed that he plans to return to Athens for an unofficial visit to learn more about the Bulldogs
Ridgeland wide receiver Michael Bowman said he will make an unofficial visit to Georgia for the second week in a row. Last week, Bowman said he arrived at the game too late to have some one-on-one conversations with Georgia’s coaches, who Bowman said have promised a scholarship if he can raise his test scores. The 6-foot-5, 222-pound Bowman is hoping this Saturday he can get a few minutes with Georgia coach Mark Richt to see if he can go ahead and commit to the Bulldogs. “Georgia has always been No. 1, and it would be great to get all this recruiting over with so I can focus on school and my senior season. We’ll see what happens.” Bowman said his “backup plan” would be Alabama or LSU. He is arguably the state’s top prospect at wide receiver, earning MVP honors at wide receiver at Georgia and Alabama camps over the summer. He is a member of the AJC’s The Super Southern 100. Georgia does not have any commitments at wide receiver for 2009, with Rantavious Wooten of Belle Glade, Fla., narrowly selecting LSU over the Bulldogs last week. Georgia is also being considered by Marlon Brown of Memphis, who denied reports he will eventually choose between Tennessee and Southern Cal.
The signs indicated that Glades Central (Fla.) receiver Rantavious Wooten was leaning toward Georgia. But he pulled a mild surprise today by revealing that he has committed to the defending national champions. “It’s LSU,” Wooten wrote in a text message to Scout.com. Numerous phone calls and text messages sent today and this evening from the Atlanta Journal-Constitution to the receiver rated as the 28th-best in the nation by Scout.com went unanswered. Wooten had promised for several weeks that he would choose between Georgia and LSU on Aug. 29. His text message to Scout.com was sent prior to Glades Central’s season opener against Dillard this evening.
Glades Central (Fla.) receiver Rantavious Wooten confirmed to the AJC this evening that he intends to announce his commitment to Georgia or LSU on Friday. Wooten, who says he made up his mind on Monday, intends on keeping the winning program in suspense until late Thursday. “I’m not going to have a press conference, but I’m just going to get the word out to everyone on Friday,” said Wooten, considered the 28th-best receiver in the nation by Scout.com. “I’ll call [Georgia or LSU] Thursday night and let them know about my decision.” Wooten on LSU: “I like the football team in general and the way they use some of their players. I like the atmosphere, the coaches and the stadium. I just like everything about it.” Wooten on UGA: “I like Georgia pretty much the same way I like LSU.”
