When North Cobb defensive tackle Derrick Lott makes an unofficial visit to UGA on Saturday, it won’t be as “one of the state’s top uncommitted prospects.” No, it will be as commitment No. 15 for Georgia’s 2009 recruiting class. Lott picked the Bulldogs over South Carolina, Louisville, and Oklahoma State on Thursday night, less than a week after he was offered by Georgia. “It feels great to get the decision over with, and it’s feel great for Georgia to be my decision,” Lott said. “Now that [recruiting] is out of the way, I can focus 100-percent back on my high school team, my school work, and my social life.” The 6-foot-4, 275-pound Lott said no one was more excited outside his family more than North Cobb coach Shane Queen. “He was screaming when Georgia offered me, and he was just as excited when I committed to Georgia. Coach Queen had never had any of his players offered by Georgia in his 15 years of coaching, so it was special to him and really meant a lot.”

I’m open until I make my commitment.” Lott, however, may have more interest in the Bulldogs that he is letting on. He attended Georgia’s season-opener against Georgia Southern, and has plans to return to Athens for other games. The 6-foot-4, 275-pound Lott said he was told by Georgia coach Mark Richt that the Bulldogs would offer if he improved his grades enough to meet college entrance requirements. Lott won over the Bulldogs with his performance at last summer’s prospect camp. “I’ve got two As and two Bs right now, so I’m feeling pretty good about the situation,” Lott said. “Georgia would be a pretty big offer. My head coach said he has been coaching for 15 years, and never had one of his players offered by Georgia. North Cobb defensive lineman Derrick Lott changed his mind and said he will not attend South Carolina’s game on Thursday night. The 6-foot-4, 265-pound Cobb had originally told GoGamecocks.com that he was planning to go because his high school team was off on Friday. However, Lott told the AJC he changed his mind because he didn’t want to miss classes on Friday. Lott has offers from South Carolina, Louisville and Michigan State, among others. He also has interest from Florida and Florida State. Lott has also impressed Georgia’s coaches, who said they told him they might offer if he improves his academics.
