Small American towns promise subtle beauty

The 1868 Cape Mendocino Lighthouse operated until 1971, when earthquakes and landslides threatened to send it over the cliff. It was disassembled and moved to Shelter Cove, Calif., in 1999. Shelter Cove is also near Humboldt Redwoods State Park, with its towering trees, in the northern part of the state. Mark Rightmire/Orange County Register
