In 1997 Michigan's Charles Woodson became the first defensive player to win the Heisman, topping a great college career. He was installed as a starting cornerback in just his third game as a freshman, and kept the job for the next 34. When opposing offenses stopped throwing to his side (he still managed 18 interceptions in three seasons), the Wolverines got him the ball via kick returns and by playing him at receiver.
