Say it ain't so: Sports heroes who left Atlanta

Knuckleball pitcher Phil Niekro was one of the Braves' few bright spots during the dismal seasons of the 1970s. He pitched his first 20 seasons with the franchise, from 1964-1983. Prior to the 1984 season, he asked for his release and the Braves granted it. He then signed with the Yankees, and later also pitched for the Indians and Blue Jays. He was signed by the Braves for a one-game curtain call in the final game of the 1987 season. AJC file
