Third-Party Candidates
Eugene McCarthy, who ran for president five times, is most famous for his 1968 candidacy. The Democrat challenged incumbent Democrat Lyndon Johnson. McCarthy ran on his opposition to the Vietnam War and had some early primary successes. After LBJ bowed out of the race, his vice president Hubert Humphrey eventually became the nominee. AP file
