In March 2008, controversial videos surfaced of Obama's pastor Rev. Jeremiah Wright, of Trinity United Church of Christ in Chicago, Ill., speaking from the pulpit. Included in the footage, Wright shouting criticisms at America for its treatment of minorities. Wright went on to say the U.S. government invented AIDS to destroy "people of color" and also suggested that U.S. policies in the Middle East and elsewhere were partly responsible for the 2001 terrorist attacks on New York and the Pentagon.
