Murphy was known for chomping cigars, wearing his white Steston and detesting both seat belts and Republicans with equal zeal. Even now, pickup truck drivers are exempt from the state's mandatory seat belt laws, because the pickup driving Murphy didn't like the restraints. John Bazemore / AP
