The 1960s: King's work expands
King was not alone in facing resistance. In March 1965, marching demonstrators (from SNCC and SCLC) were beaten when crossing the Edmund Pettus Bridge on their planned march to Montgomery, Ala., from Selma, Ala. Their attackers were state highway patrolmen. An order by Gov. George Wallace had prohibited the march. AP
