Georgia wildlife photos | Hellbenders
Thomas Floyd, a biologist with the DNR non-game conservation division examines a hellbender caught in a creek running through the Chattahoochee National Forest near Union, GA Tuesday July 31, 2012. Hellbenders, unique to mountains of eastern United States, are one of the largest salamanders in the world, and can reach 2 feet long. Floyd and his team took blood and tissue samples before returning the hellbender back to the stream. Brant Sanderlin / bsanderlin@ajc.com
