Build your own rain-collection barrel
To make the barrel, you'll need a power drill, a 7/8" paddle bit, a jigsaw or keyhole saw, scissors and long-handled pliers. Begin with a 55-gallon food-grade drum like this one. You'll need mesh screen, 1/2" PVC faucet, 3/4" flat steel washer, a No. 12 o-ring, a 1/2"threaded 90-degree PVC elbow, a 24" cable tie (bag of 10), a 6" plastic drain cover and a flexible downspout elbow.
