7. Treat it with care, and it will reward you. To keep the container plants alive, water them correctly. Plants in shade need a third to one-half as much water as those in the sun. Water when plants start to wilt or when the soil feels dry to the touch. Be water-wise by using collected rainwater or water from the shower instead of reaching for the garden hose.
