Hequembourg walks away from a grave marker belonging to a share cropper who once farmed the property. Hequembourg's wife, Hope, is a member of the influential Benton family. Some of her relatives helped found Bank of Monticello and Georgia Marble Co. They acquired the plantation in Georgia's second land lottery, in 1807. Joey Ivansco/AJC
