Deadly diseases have global impact

H1N1 (swine flu): This strain of influenza hit Mexico hard in 2009, prompting the World Health Organization to raise the influenza pandemic alert level and for the U.S. to issue travel warnings to Mexico. Swine flu infections occurred in the U.S. as well, The most recent CDC mid-level estimates are that about 60 million people in the United States have been infected with 2009 H1N1, 270,000 have been hospitalized and 12,270 people have died from a 2009 H1N1-related illness.
