40 mpg cars

The Chevrolet Volt is an electric car that has a gas engine "range extender." It gets up to 40 miles on a full charge. Unlike other electric cars, you won't be stuck when the battery runs out during your drive. Its gas engine kicks in to power the battery. So two powertrains required the EPA to give the Volt two ratings. It gets the equivalent of 95 mpg city and 90 highway when running on its battery. When running strictly on gas, it gets 35 mpg city and 40 highway. Associated Press
