Year-in-Review: July deaths
Dr. Michael DeBakey was a world-renowned American heart surgeon, innovator and educator who pioneered heart bypass surgery. At 23, while still in medical school at Tulane University, DeBakey invented the roller pump, which 20 years later, became an essential component of the heart-lung machine. In the 1960s, DeBakey and his team were among the first to record surgeries on film, which progressed medical education. DeBakey passed away on July 11. Associated Press
