About the data
The Atlanta-Journal Constitution calculates executive compensation using figures published in company filings with the Securities and Exchange Commission. The filings typically include compensation for companies’ five highest-paid executives.
The calculations include the following categories: base salary, bonus, non-equity performance incentives, the estimated value of stock and options granted in the year, above-market or preferential gains in pension value and all other compensation. Other compensation typically includes items such as club memberships, financial planning services, auto allowances and personal use of company aircraft.
In some cases, the AJC made its own estimates of stock and option grants because the company did not provide those estimates in its filing. The actual value of stock and options may increase or decrease based on the price of the company’s stock. Companies also often require executives to remain with the company for several years before stock and option grants fully vest. In addition, some of the stock and option values are based on the target amount of shares expected to granted to the executive. The actual number of shares could vary depending on the company’s performance.
The average annual pay for workers in Georgia across all occupations was $40,080 in 2008, according to the U.S. Department of Labor's Bureau of Labor Statistics.
